My Journey to Holistic & Functional Psychology

I knew at an early age I wanted to be a psychologist. What I didn’t know in the beginning is how my personal healing journey would shape everything I believe about psychiatric symptoms, our reigning treatment models, and the need for compassionate holistic care. After years of seeking solutions to what medical professionals swore either did not exist or was not a problem, I finally realized it was up to me. I knew what I was experiencing was real. I also knew, on the intuitive level, there was an explanation for it- a root cause- just maybe not an easy or straightforward one. So began my journey beyond the parameters of clinical psychology and into the field of integrative medicine. I sought guidance and treatment from healers of various modalities and backgrounds. I moved on from those who did not listen. As I studied basic nutritional functions & needs, biological & physiological responses, the importance of glucose regulation & stress management, and the mind-body connection, my life and my professional practice dramatically transformed. As I incorporated this expanded knowledge into treatment with my own patients, their healing likewise expanded becoming fuller and more sustainable.

My symptoms were not just problems needing to be eliminated or “fixed.” My symptoms were warning signals. My body was communicating its needs- I just didn’t know how to listen.
